Must we torture strays to death?

I REFER to the photograph accompanying the article “On the hunt for stray dogs” (The Star, Feb 8). The photo shows one of MPSJ’s dog catchers lifting a stray dog up by one of its hind legs.

This is atrocious. This may have probably done serious injury to the dog. I suppose the officials might argue that they plan to euthanise the animals anyway, but must we dislocate their limbs beforehand?

This is merely one more heart-breaking illustration of the city councils’ inhumanity towards the animals who share the planet with us. Yes, large packs of stray dogs can pose health risks to the human community, but must we torture them to death?

Please make an effort to employ animal control officers with the decency and skills to capture and handle strays humanely. Malaysia can do better than this.

APPALLED,
Kuala Lumpur.
