Humans have been training dogs to carry out tasks for them since prehistoric times, when the main use for a dog was to help humans in their hunt for food. As now, dogs would be trained to hunt and catch small animals such as rabbits and hares, and also to track larger prey which the dog would either bring to bay to be finally killed by its master, or would chase towards a party of men who would then dispatch the larger animal.

When your dog barks, it can mean a variety of things depending on the tone of the bark and the surrounding circumstance.
An excited alert bark may welcome a familiar person who is approaching. A deep bark combined with a growl may be a warning to a stranger approaching. Or you dog may use a short quick bark to alert you of a need. For instance, he's ready to go outside to the backyard and needs you to open the door.
Try listening to the tones of your pooch's vocalizations as well as assessing the situation, and you'll find that you may start to understand you canine's lingo a little bit more.

To curb puppy nipping and biting behaviors, there's a few things that you can do. For a younger puppy, it's usually effective to give a yelping noise like a litter mate might do. For the older puppy, keep some chew toys handy. If your puppy starts to nip, redirect her biting to the chew toy and she'll eventually figure out what's appropriate to put in her mouth. For the especially vigilant nipping pup, give her a sharp "No!" and then ignore her for a while. She may be biting to get attention and will stop if it ceases to become effective.

Don't be fooled into thinking that a tall kennel fence is enough to keep your dog in all the time. Some breeds of dogs can climb fences in order to make their escape. Secure the top of a kennel run with a kennel roof to keep the area cooler, drier, and help keep your dog at home.
