Just because Fido isn’t human, doesn’t mean that he won’t end up on Santa’s “good” list this year. Make sure you don’t forget your dog when it comes to giving fantastic Christmas gifts. But what should you buy? Christmas is the perfect opportunity to get your dog something a little bit special, that you wouldn’t buy on a “normal” day.
The first thing you’ll need is a dog stocking. This will make certain that Santa knows where to put the gifts when he comes sliding down your chimney on Christmas eve night. Once you have that, the sky’s the limit. But for those of you who need a bit more direction than simply “the sky”, here are some fantastic ideas to get you started:
New food/water dishes – instead of the same old standard stainless steel, why don’t you give your dog some fully functional food and water dishes that match your décor, or your dog’s personality. There are so many different options out there today that it makes accessorizing very simple.
Raised dishes – is your dog getting older, is your floor a mess around the dishes, or do you fear that your large dog will have back problems from bending down to eat? Problem solved: There are many different kinds of raised dishes where stainless steel bowls are set into an adjustable pedestal. This makes eating less straining on the back and the floor stays drier.
Clothing – every kind of clothing you can think of has a doggie counterpart. From sweaters, to t‐shirts, to jackets, coats, hats, and boots, your dog can have a wardrobe that is every bit as big as yours. For some dogs, this is just decoration, but for others, such as older dogs or short‐haired dogs, a sweater can be very handy in the colder weather. Combine style with practicality and your pooch will feel the love.
Fancy leash or collar – as much as standard leashes and collars are practical, you can have the same practicality and add a bit of flair with stylish, fancy leashes and collars. You
can get a matched set, or mix them up. The options are seemingly endless with the vast range of patterns, colors, fabrics, textures, gems, and studs. The holidays are a wonderful excuse to give your dog a new look.
Treats – no Christmas is ever complete for your dog if there hasn’t been some special munchie to eat. For that special day of the year, consider biscuits in Christmas shapes, rawhide bones in festive themes, or even just an oversized cookie to make your puppy’s eyes bug out.
Toys – depending on the type of dog you have, you’ll need a certain kind of toy. Dogs that love to chew will enjoy extremely durable toys for ongoing, safe fun. Older dogs and gentle dogs will get a lot of pleasure from a stuffed animal that has been designed especially for safety with dogs. Highenergy dogs will go bananas for anything they can chase, such as knotted ropes, Frisbees, and balls. Check online, or head over to the pet store for tons of great ideas.
Dog bed – give your dog the gift of a great sleep that is easy on the joints with a good quality bed that is just the perfect size for your companion animal. There are enough styles, shapes, and textures out there to meet the needs of even the most finicky pet.
Charitable donation – share the love that your dog gets every day. Your pooch might not know that there are other dogs in need out there, but you certainly do. Give generously in your
dog’s name to dog rescue groups, nokill shelters, and other worthy organizations that save thousands of dogs every year. Support them with a donation, or by buying t‐shirts and
other gifts that send profits to puppies in need.
Gift certificate – alright, so a dog may not understand the concept of a gift certificate, but if the dog isn’t yours, and you’re really not sure what to buy him or her for Christmas, most large pet stores offer gift certificates that will allow a more knowing shopper to pick out the perfect gift.
Christmas is a time for the whole family to enjoy, and as an important member of the family, your dog is entitled to gifts that are just as great as everyone else. Merry Christmas!
